Stay here for the night, and in the morning if he wants to do his duty as your guardian-redeemer, good; let him redeem you. But if he is not willing, as surely as the Lord lives I will do it.
Ruth 3:13 NIV
For most people when they hear the word redeem, they think Jesus, who came to die for our sins. And yes, that is true. As a matter of fact, one of my favorite songs is “My Redeemer Lives” by Nicole C. Mullen.
But for me personally, when I hear the word redeem, I think of Ruth and Naomi. A real story of redemption.
Ruth and Naomi were left destitute after losing their spouses. For Naomi she not only lost her husband, but her two sons as well.
Naomi decided to return to Bethlehem and Ruth followed. For Ruth it meant going to a strange place, where she would be deemed a foreigner.
They lived in poverty but Ruth’s loyalty to her mother-in-law brought blessings for them both.
The Lord sent a guardian-redeemer to them. His name was Boaz and he married Ruth, restoring to Naomi not just a family, but the opportunity of being an ancestor to Jesus.
For me, I became a guardian-redeemer to my mother. She has dementia and unfortunately, she lost some of her property to an unscrupulous relative. But the Lord guided me, and I was able to restore most of it, with a directive from Him to take care of my mother and protect her.
There is someone out there who needs you. Who can you be a guardian-redeemer to? It does not have to be a relative, just someone who needs someone to look out for them.
This post is part of the weekly Five Minute Friday link-up. This week’s prompt is the word REDEEM.
For inspiration, here is the song My Redeemer Lives by Nicole C. Mullen.
There’s not much time that’s left to me
in this earthly life,
but I’ll still do my best to be
support unto my wife
who works each day with diligence,
humility and prayer,
whose heart is turned toward excellence,
but she’s often not aware
of just how much that drive can cost,
so I will take some load
that her bright joy is not lost
along this rocky road
and I will give her all I am
for as long as I yet can.
Love this.
