I worked as a stenographer for 34 years until my early retirement last year, January. The day I retired was one of my happiest. I looked forward to resting. No more waking up during dawn, commuting for two or more hours, and arriving home at dusk.
I remember the year before I decided to retire early, how tired I’d become. It was a struggle to wake up on mornings. I’d be cranky and sleepy at the office, and by the time I arrived home, all I desired was to jump in bed. My body and mind had become worn. Oh, how I pursued rest.
The time I have spent at home has been truly wonderful. I’ve established a kitchen garden in my backyard growing some of my favourite herbs and vegetables. In my front yard I’ve planted flowers and potted plants that attract beautiful butterflies, bees, and birds. I sit and rest on my porch admiring God’s wonderful creation.
I’m able to enjoy our beaches, sleep late, stay up late, relax and read at my leisure. Watch TV, Bible study and work on my book, all at my own pace. My two children have now started working and are already complaining of being tired. I say to them, “Don’t complain, you’ve only now started.”
Some of my retired friends have returned to work citing boredom at home. How? While I’m aware many people enjoy working, shouldn’t there be time to put aside a career to enjoy other pursuits?
Pursuing rest is just as important as pursuing peace because rest is important to Jesus as He tells us in Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
For me, retirement does not mean staying at home and lazing. It is a time to explore other creative activities. You can pursue rest in creative ways, retired or not. Your mind and body will thank you for it. I know mine have.

I’m definitely of retirement age. I haven’t worked full-time or had a big career. I was a mostly a helper to my husband. I’ve always loved staying home. It suits me. I also am not lazy but find plenty of time to do the things I love. Enjoy your retirement! I feel like the only people who don’t wanna go back to work are those who have worked the hardest. Enjoy! You’ve earned it!
Thank you Gina!
You are blessed to be able to retire, and I can’t imagine ever being bored.
I wish I could retire too, but sadly, due to unwise choices in my youth, that’s unlikely to ever happen–barring an unexpected miracle from God.
Hello Sandra, I’m sure the day will come when you can retire, even if that day is in eternity. God is good.
oh I get it. Enjoying the work until it’s time to say enough now, time to relax and enjoy the goodness of God and pursue other interests and events. it’s good yes? FMF14
