Helping Women Find their Identity in Christ

I just love happy endings, which is why I love the book of Ruth. Naomi is my favorite character because she was the one who lost almost everything she had, while in a foreign country.

Naomi lost her husband and two sons in Moab. She decided to return home to Bethlehem when she learned the famine ended. When she arrived, she told the people to stop calling her Naomi and start calling her Mara, which means bitter, because her life had become bitter due to the loss of her family.

But God, being the loving God that He is, looked upon Naomi and had compassion on her. Naomi recovered from her bitterness after Ruth married and had a son.

The women of the town were so happy for her that they told her:

“May he restore your youth and care for you in your old age. For he is the son of your daughter-in-law who loves you and has been better to you than seven sons!”

Ruth 4:15 NLT

She not only recovered from her grief but also recovered her name, Naomi which means pleasant or beautiful.

When I think of this story, I think about that time in my life when I suffered from miscarriages and the death of two babies right after their birth. After that experience, I felt just like Naomi – bitter; to the point where I declared I would never have any more children.

But years after that tragedy, God restored to me two children. It took me a while to see His hand in the events that played out in my life, but after careful retrospection, I said, “it can only be God.”

Have you experienced any kind of loss? Trust that God would restore to you what you lost. He may not do it in the way you think, But He will do it. Just trust Him.
