Helping Women Find their Identity in Christ

Communicate with God

Prayer is communicating with God which is no different to when you connect with family and friends via your cell phone.

Ah the cell phone! What a marvelous tool for keeping in touch with the most important people in your life. Wherever you are you can dial up or text as well receive all those important calls and messages. Most people just cannot live without their phones, it has become an extension of themselves.

Sometimes people talk on their phones for hours at a time, not wanting to stop because the conversation is so sweet. Some people prefer to text. Have you ever noticed how their thumbs just fly over the screen when they are texting?

But what about your calls to God? Do you spend hours at a time communicating with Him? How many times a day do you dial Him up? Or “text” Him? You know He wants to hear from you.

Prayer is communicating with God. He wants to hear from you and He is available anytime, day or night to receive your calls and texts.

Pray Regularly

Jesus always made time to pray to His Father. In the garden of Gethsemane before his crucifixion, Jesus prayed three times that same night for the cup to be taken away from him (Matthew 26:36-44). This means in times of anxiety you can pray as many times as is necessary until you find relief from whatever is troubling you.

Daniel too prayed regularly, three times a day to be exact.

Then they said to the king, “Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah, pays no attention to you, Your Majesty, or to the decree you put in writing. He still prays three times a day.”

Daniel 6:13 NIV

Daniel did not allow anyone or anything to stop him from praying to God as he usually did. He kept that communication going even if it meant death to him.

Write your Prayers

One way you can keep in constant communication with God is by keeping a prayer journal. Write down your prayers. Think of it as a form of “texting” your message to Him.

This is also a great way of keeping track of your prayers and making note of how he answered and worked in your life.

Take a look at the Psalms. They are made up of songs and prayers by people who poured out their heart to God. You can do the same, and it will make a great memento to pass down to a family member, leaving them an example of how prayer worked in your life.

Love God

To communicate with God effectively means we must love Him just as He loves us. This love includes keeping his Commandments.

“Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome”.

I John 5:3 NLT

By listening to God and doing what He says, makes communicating with Him so much easier. Obedience is an integral part of developing a relationship with God. When we obey there is no fear, and this makes it easy to approach Him.

Constant and continued prayer means living a life connected to God, and just as we look forward to communicating with our loved ones, we look forward to praying to God because we love Him.

Reflect and Respond

Schedule time each day to pray and communicate with God, whether by talking to Him or journaling your prayers.

  1. One of my favorite ways to pray right now is through the written word – the concepts of Immanuel Journaling (from the book Joyful Journey by Sungshim Loppnow) have been *such* a powerful means of connecting to God and resting in his love for me. Thank you for this post, Lisa!
